mastlog.ldf is compressed WTF -fail

Posted in Bytes on August 15th, 2011 by keif

Sometimes your computer is your worst enemy! In one of the few instances where I had to actually use a windows server and database illustrated this point. ?The file ?C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.2\MSSQL\DATA\mastlog.ldf? is compressed but does not reside in a read-only database or file group. The file must be decompressed.? This was followed by a big WTF.

So this production box now had a failed service. What caused this? Well after selecting the compressed file and hitting properties->advance I discovered the “compress content to save space” option was set. I deselected the option and applied. I went through and did the same to each database file then restarted the M$ sql database. WIN! The db was up.

This must have been an occasion where windows offered to be helpful and clean up to create free space. In the end windows shot itself in the foot. Never mind the fact admins should not blankly accept help from windows.

The lesson here is to not let M$ decide what to compress for you. Well and use a unix server and Mysql if possible.

Iphone 3gs 3g and wifi not working 4.3.5

Posted in Bytes on August 14th, 2011 by keif

My iPhone was unable to browse the web unless I disabled data and used wifi, or killed the wifi and used data. Even when browsing with wifi I would get the ATT icon and not the wifi icon. If I didn’t have the unlimited plan I bet this would have ate up my data plan like a rat in a feed mill.

This problem presented itself after updating to 4.3.5 IOS.

What I did to fix it is probably very obvious, but I will share. I plugged the iPhone in to my computer, synced and backed up. Restored to factory, and restored back up. Ever since then its been working fine!

A2DP stopped working on IOS4.0

Earlier in this week I turned on my bluetooth headset which is paired to my iPhone and I could only receive calls. My music would not play over the headset. It wasn’t even a choice. After rebooting the phone A2DP -music- on my iPhone still didn’t work. Thinking back I remembered the last thing I did was upgrade to IOS 4.0 (IOS? is this a Cisco switch now? common Apple). So I removed my headset from the iPhone and then re-paired to the headset. Problem solved.

That was my thought until I turned off my ear piece, turned off bluetooth on the iPhone. When I turned both on A2DP no longer worked. I would have to re-pair them again. This will require some investigation. . .
